Try this conversation yourselfA friend asks for help moving tonight. The exercise offers two openings. We choose the warm, clear response: “I know moving is a lot. I can't help tonight, but I hope you find someone.”
The scripted friend asks whether even an hour would be possible. We keep the boundary: “I can't make it tonight, even for an hour. I wanted to be clear so you can make another plan.”
We rewind the opening and try a shorter version: “I can't help tonight. Please make another plan.” A different fictional reply appears. The exercise lets you compare your wording; it does not predict a real person's reaction.
