Frequently asked questions
What is Pretake?
Pretake: Practice First is an iPhone app for adults aged 18+ to rehearse texts and difficult conversations with AI. It uses supported chat context to generate possible replies, and lets you rewind and try different wording. It is AI practice, not the real person.
Who is it for?
Adults who want to practice an apology, a boundary, a request or a difficult opening before a real exchange. Pretake is a rehearsal tool, not therapy, crisis support, or a way to predict or control another person.
What can I import?
Pretake supports WhatsApp chat exports, supported saved chat files, screenshots and screen recordings. You can record a chat in iMessage, Telegram or Instagram for text recognition on the phone. Import only conversations you were part of and have the right to use.
Can I try it without importing a chat?
Yes. Pretake includes a fictional sample, and its welcome screen has a scripted illustration. The website also offers fixed fictional exercises and a free conversation planner. The planner is a worksheet, not the AI app.
What does “Help me say it” do?
Describe what you want to express in your own words, and Pretake suggests wording using the available conversation context. The suggestion is labeled and fills the composer for you to review. You decide whether to send it in the practice chat; it is never sent to the real person.
Can I rewind and keep earlier takes?
Yes. You can rewind a practice conversation, change a message or try another simulated reply. Earlier versions remain available so you can compare takes. They are alternative rehearsals, not evidence that a certain wording will produce a certain real reply.
Can I add newer chat history?
Yes. You can bring in a newer chat to update an existing person. Pretake adds new messages to the available imported context. Import quality and the available history affect what context can be used.
Does Pretake know what the real person will say?
No. AI replies are fictional possibilities based on available text and writing style. The simulation cannot know someone’s private thoughts, verify their feelings or predict their next response. Practice messages are not sent to them.
Is Pretake free, and what does it cost?
Pretake is free to download with one person and 40 free replies. Pretake Unlimited includes unlimited people and 900 replies per 30 days. US App Store prices checked October 1, 2026 are $9.99 monthly or $79.99 yearly. Subscriptions auto-renew; local prices, limits and terms appear before purchase.
Where is chat data processed?
Import files are read on your phone. With your permission, selected text is processed by Pretake and its AI services. Style-profile excerpts, selected imported messages and practice conversations are stored encrypted on the server. The full imported transcript stays on the device. Provider retention may apply; this is not a promise of zero retention.
Can I delete my data?
You can delete a person or use Delete everything in Settings to remove associated app and server data. Deletion requires a successful server request; the app preserves access if that fails so you can retry. Deleting data does not cancel an App Store subscription. See the privacy and deletion pages for details.
Where can I use Pretake?
The verified public download linked here is the iPhone App Store listing. Version 1.1.0 requires iOS 17.0 or later. The website has free guides, scripted exercises and a planner; it does not provide the native app’s AI rehearsal.
Is Pretake a voice-cloning or live-call practice app?
No. Pretake provides text-based rehearsal, not voice cloning or live spoken-delivery coaching. Some simulated messages can be presented as a voice-note transcript or a described photo; those are fictional text representations, not a real person’s audio or photo.
Are the people and messages in the guides real?
No. Website examples are fictional writing exercises created by Pretake. They are not user transcripts, testimonials, case studies or evidence of outcomes. The same is true of the sample people provided in the app.
