Published by Pretake. This is a comparison of workflows, based on Pretake 1.1.0 and OpenAI’s public documentation checked October 1 and rechecked October 8, 2026. It is not an independent benchmark, and neither product has been shown here to predict a real person’s reaction.
The practical differences
| Question | Pretake | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| How do I begin? | Try a fictional sample or import a supported chat into a dedicated iPhone rehearsal. | Describe a situation and request a role-play in a general-purpose chat. |
| Can I supply context? | Import supported exports, screenshots or recordings; the app extracts text on the phone. | Provide a written summary or supported files; tools and limits vary by plan. |
| How do I try another version? | Rewind, edit a practice message or request another simulated reply; earlier takes remain available. | Edit an earlier message to branch the conversation, regenerate a reply, or start a separate chat with a revised prompt. |
| Can it help me draft? | “Help me say it” suggests wording you review before sending in practice. | Ask for wording options or feedback as part of the conversation. |
| What kind of practice is it? | Text conversation rehearsal, not live spoken-delivery coaching. | Text or voice conversation, depending on available features. |
| Does it know the real person? | No. Imported style and context do not reveal private thoughts. | No. A detailed prompt still cannot establish private thoughts. |
| What does it cost? | Free allowance; optional monthly or yearly subscription. Details below. | Free and paid plans; current limits and prices are on OpenAI’s site. |
ChatGPT feature descriptions above are based on OpenAI’s overview and plan comparison. This table does not imply that ChatGPT cannot use context or that every account has identical controls.
One fictional task, two workflows
Suppose you want to ask a friend to stop making plans on your behalf. The task is to make your request clear and practice answering “I was only trying to include you.” All people and messages in this example are fictional.
The opening to practice
“Please check with me before telling people I’ll join. I like being invited, but I want to decide whether I can make it.”
The sentence is the same in either tool. Compare whether you can express your limit and answer a follow-up, not whether one simulation gives a more flattering reply.
In Pretake
Open a sample or a rehearsal with supported chat context you are entitled to use. Write the opening, read a simulated reply, and answer once. Rewind to the earlier point and try a shorter request. You can revisit earlier takes instead of treating a new attempt as proof that the real person would respond differently.
In ChatGPT
Describe a fictional friend and ask for turn-by-turn practice. For example: “Play a fictional friend who has made a plan without checking with me. Reply to my opening one turn at a time. After two exchanges, stop so I can try another opening. Don’t infer anything about a real person.” You can add relevant context, but avoid unnecessary private details.
For either workflow, finish by writing down the request you mean and one way to respond if they disagree. A convincing simulation is still invented.
Privacy depends on what you provide and the settings
Pretake reads import files on your phone. With permission, selected text is sent to Pretake and AI services. Profile excerpts, selected imported messages and practice conversations are stored encrypted on Pretake’s server. The full imported transcript remains on the device; that does not mean no imported text leaves it. See Pretake’s processing, retention and deletion policy.
ChatGPT provides model-training and other data controls, subject to account and workspace settings. Turning off model improvement does not by itself delete chat history. Review OpenAI’s data controls before providing private material.
OpenAI says an unsaved Temporary Chat is not used to improve models and may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Saving it changes it to a regular chat with the applicable settings. See the Temporary Chat documentation. Neither product should be described here as a guarantee of zero retention.
For a generic rehearsal, invented names and a short situation summary may be enough. You do not have to upload a private transcript just because an upload option exists.
Costs and limits
Pretake 1.1.0 is free to download and includes one person and 40 free replies. Pretake Unlimited provides unlimited people and 900 replies per 30 days. The US App Store lists $9.99 monthly and $79.99 yearly as checked October 1, 2026. Subscriptions auto-renew; local prices and terms are shown before purchase. Official Pretake listing.
ChatGPT has a free plan and paid plans with different allowances. If you already have access, try a short fictional rehearsal before deciding whether a dedicated app adds anything you need. Check OpenAI’s current plans rather than assuming a price or unlimited use.
When each is the better fit
- Choose Pretake when the iPhone import flow, familiar conversation context and dedicated takes are useful enough to justify a separate app.
- Choose ChatGPT when you want a flexible general-purpose assistant, an invented scenario or available voice interaction, and you are comfortable setting the exercise up yourself.
- Choose a worksheet or friend when you want to keep the exercise simple or avoid providing context to an AI service.
- Choose appropriate human support when the central issue is safety, recurring harm or distress rather than finding a sentence. Neither app replaces that support.
Try a small rehearsal
Use the free planner to decide your opening first. For other formats, read apps and ways to practice a difficult conversation. If Pretake fits, download it on the App Store. It is for adults 18+ and is AI practice, not the real person.
