They text: wyd

Same two words at 3pm would mean something else.

Every name and message on this page is made up. Use the replies as starting points, not scripts; no wording guarantees how someone will answer.

What “wyd” usually means

Literally “what (are) you doing.” In practice it’s the text people send when they want to talk to you and don’t have a topic yet. The time it arrives changes the meaning a lot.

WhenWhat it often means
Middle of the dayBored, thinking about you, or warming up to ask something
From a friendA plan is forming. “wyd” is often the move right before “wanna get food”
After a chat went quietA restart. They want the conversation back without having to bring a topic
Late at nightOften wants to hang out or flirt. Sometimes it’s the politer cousin of “u up”

The tell is what they do after you answer. A follow-up question or a plan means they had a reason. “nm just bored” means the ball is back with you, and you get to decide whether to pick it up.

What to reply

When you’re doing nothing

  • You: absolutely nothing and i’m weirdly good at it. wbu

Honest, a little cocky, and it hands the question back.

  • You: staring at my ceiling. it’s not much of a conversationalist so you’re up

Turns “nothing” into an invitation for them to carry the next bit.

Keep it going

  • You: making pasta that’s about to be either amazing or a crime scene

A specific detail they can react to. Swap in whatever you’re actually doing.

  • You: just got back from the gym so i’m insufferable rn. what are you up to

Self-aware, and it ends on a question so they have something to answer.

Flirty

  • You: nothing worth reporting. unless you’re about to change that

Open-ended, and it puts the next move on them.

  • You: was literally about to text you. you win this round

Only if it’s true. It lands because it’s a small admission.

Turn it into a plan

  • You: nothing rn. tacos in an hour?

The shortest route from texting to actually seeing each other. Only send it if you mean it.

Busy

  • You: at work till 6 😭 text me after?

Busy plus a time tells them you want the conversation, just later.

  • You: out with friends, i’ll text you tomorrow

Clear and friendly. Then actually text tomorrow.

Not tonight

  • You: about to sleep actually. night!

For a late “wyd” you don’t want to turn into anything. Friendly, clear, done.

What not to send

  • “nm” with nothing after it Technically an answer, practically a closed door.
  • “why” Makes them justify wanting to talk to you.
  • “wyd” back without answering Two people asking, nobody answering.
  • A fake “busy” your story contradicts If you’re about to post the party, don’t claim you’re asleep.

Rehearse it first

If one person’s “wyd” always leaves you staring at the keyboard, import your chat with them into Pretake. Try the flirty answer and the plan answer on an AI that texts in their style, see what a reply could look like, and rewind to compare.
