All people, messages, amounts and replies in these examples are fictional. Adapt the wording to your situation; no script guarantees a response.

Before you begin

The phrase alone does not tell you whether the topic is a relationship problem, a practical decision or something else. Resist filling in the missing information with a confident interpretation. Ask a question that the sender can answer.

Choose whether you can talk now. You do not need to abandon a meeting, drive while upset or start an important discussion when you have no privacy. If they indicate an immediate danger or urgent need, respond to that actual information rather than to the vague phrase.

What to say: example wording

Ask for context

“Okay. What’s it about? I’m free after 7 if that works.”

Dani acknowledges the message and offers a time. The question is direct without turning the sender into a suspect.

You cannot talk yet

“I can talk after work. Can you give me a rough idea what it’s about, so I know what we’re making time for?”

You are asking for enough context to prepare, not requiring them to conduct the whole conversation by text.

They prefer to speak in person

“Sure, we can talk in person. Is it about the weekend plans or something about us? I’m free at 6.”

Offer categories only if they are plausible; do not present your worst fear as the only possibility.

What not to say, and why

  • “Are you breaking up with me?” as a conclusion rather than a question. If that fear is strong, ask for context before treating it as established.
  • “What did I do now?” It assumes blame and can start an argument before the topic is known.
  • Ten messages in quick succession. More guesses are not more information.
  • “Whatever it is, I’m sorry.” An apology before you know the issue can obscure what actually needs discussing.

How the other person might react

These are invented possibilities to prepare for, not predictions.

They explain the topic

Confirm the time and any useful preparation. “Thanks for telling me. I can talk about the travel costs tonight; I’ll check what I’ve already booked.”

They say, “I don’t want to text about it”

“That’s okay. Can you at least tell me the general topic? Then we can save the details for the call.” They may still choose not to elaborate; you can keep the agreed time.

They insist you talk immediately

“I can give this my full attention at 7. If it’s urgent, like a safety thing or a deadline, tell me now.” State your availability without claiming that their concern cannot be urgent.

When the conversation starts, hear the actual issue

Begin with “What did you want to talk about?” rather than delivering the defense you prepared while waiting. If the issue surprises you, you can ask for time to think instead of producing an immediate decision.

If this vague opening is a recurring source of tension, raise that afterward: “Next time, could you name the topic when you ask to talk? It helps me prepare.” Make it a practical request rather than a rule that no difficult conversation may ever surprise you.

Rehearse it first

Practice asking for context and agreeing on a time. Avoid asking the AI to decode the phrase as evidence of a breakup; it cannot know what the sender intends.

Pretake on iPhone lets you practice messages with AI and rewind to try different words. It is AI practice, not the real person; a simulated reply cannot tell you what they will think or say. Practice messages are never sent to them.
