Pretake practice guides

Rehearse the text you keep rewriting.

Write the message you mean, check what you are asking for, and try a possible reply before deciding to send it. Pretake lets you rehearse the exchange with an AI simulation using your chat history.

Try a complete apology, including a reply you might find difficult.

Give your text one clear purpose

Before another rewrite, finish this sentence: “After reading this, I want them to understand…” Perhaps you want to apologise, say no, ask for a plan, or arrange a longer conversation.

Use that sentence to decide what belongs in the message. If the draft asks three questions and revisits several old disagreements, choose which part you need to address first. You can write the other points down separately.

Keep your own voice. A rehearsal should help you find wording you can stand behind, including if the reply is disappointing.

Three messages to practice

These are invented examples for a writing exercise. Adapt the details to your situation and only include statements you mean.

An apology

“I’m sorry I interrupted you yesterday. I didn’t give you space to finish. If you want to talk about it, I’ll listen.”

Practice a reply that does not immediately accept the apology. Can you acknowledge what happened without asking the other person to reassure you?

A boundary

“I can’t lend money this month. I wanted to give you a clear answer so you can make another plan.”

Try answering a follow-up request. Decide beforehand whether your answer can change, and avoid promising something you cannot do.

A request for a conversation

“I’d like to talk about how we split the housework. Is tomorrow evening a good time?”

Here the text has a small job: arranging the conversation. You can prepare the longer exchange with the difficult conversation exercise.

Try the next message in Pretake

Pretake is an iPhone app for practicing conversations. Start with its fictional sample or bring in a chat you were part of. A WhatsApp chat export, screenshots, or a screen recording can give the simulation context.

  1. Type the message you are considering into your practice conversation.
  2. Read the AI-generated reply as one possible response, then try answering it.
  3. If you want to change your approach, press and hold a message and rewind.
  4. Try another version and ask yourself which one communicates your intention more clearly.

The simulation uses the available conversation context and writing style. It does not know the real person’s private thoughts, and a familiar-sounding reply can still be wrong. Avoid treating a reassuring rehearsal as a promise about the real exchange.

Before you send the real text

  • Is it accurate? Remove claims about what the other person must be thinking.
  • Is the request clear? Make sure they can understand what you are asking, if anything.
  • Does it sound like you? Read it once without the surrounding rehearsal.
  • Does it need to be sent now? You can pause or decide to have a conversation another way.

Pretake does not send messages through WhatsApp, iMessage, or another chat app. You decide what to say in the real conversation and send it yourself in your usual messaging app.

Selected chat text is processed by AI services to run the rehearsal. Read how Pretake handles your data before importing a private conversation, or use the fictional sample to explore the app first.
