Export your chat

iPhone

  1. Open the chat in WhatsApp and tap the name at the top.
  2. Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
  3. Choose Without Media.
  4. Tap Save to Files, come back here and choose the zip.

Android

  1. Open the chat and tap ⋮ in the top corner.
  2. Tap More, then Export chat.
  3. Choose Without media.
  4. Save the .txt to your phone or Drive, then choose it here.

Questions

Is my chat private?

Yes. This page reads your export in your browser, on your device. The chat is never uploaded and never stored, and it is gone when you close the tab. The page’s security policy only lets it connect to getpretake.com, for anonymous visit counts that never include anything from your chat.

Which files work?

The .zip WhatsApp makes on iPhone and the .txt it makes on Android. Exports in any language and date format work, with 12- or 24-hour clocks. If your iPhone already unzipped the file, choose the _chat.txt inside the folder.

Why are some numbers approximate?

An export only contains what WhatsApp writes into it: Android records times to the minute, reactions and calls are missing, and very long chats can lose their oldest messages. Some numbers also need a rule. A new chat starts after 6 hours of quiet, reply times only count answers within those 6 hours, and times are as the exporting phone saw them.

Does it work for group chats?

Yes. You see the five people who send the most, and the story card shows the top three. In a group, any answer to someone else counts as a reply, so read reply times loosely. The cards work best for a chat between two people.

What does this have to do with Pretake?

Pretake is our iPhone app. It imports the same export and builds an AI version of the other person from how they text, so you can practise a message, see a possible reply and rewind. Its replies are possibilities, not predictions. This page is free and does not need the app. Pretake is independent of WhatsApp and Meta.
