You text: pumpkin patch was a success 🎃

They text: ok you’re cute

And now you have to say something.

Every name and message on this page is made up. Use the replies as starting points, not scripts; no wording guarantees how someone will answer.

What it might mean

Flirting
The most common reading, especially out of nowhere or about a photo.
Affection for something you did
“you’re cute for remembering that” is about your behavior. Warm, maybe flirty, maybe just sweet.
Friendly
Some friends say it constantly. Check whether they say it to everyone.
A test
Sometimes they’re seeing whether you flirt back before they risk saying more.

Look at the emoji (🙂 and 😏 are very different), what triggered it (a selfie versus a joke) and whether they keep going after you reply. If you can’t tell and you like them, flirt back a little and let their next message clear it up.

What to reply

Flirt back

  • You: cute? i was going for devastating but i’ll take it

Accepts it with a reversal. Confident, not arrogant.

  • You: i know. but it’s nice hearing it from you

Cocky first half, sweet second half.

  • You: took you long enough to notice

Playful, and it implies you’d noticed them first.

Flustered but into it

  • You: stop 😭 ok thank you

    Honest fluster reads as interest.

  • You: you can’t just say that with no warning

Tells them it landed, without a speech.

Push it toward a plan

  • You: say it to my face then. coffee saturday?

Turns a compliment into a date. Only if you’d actually go.

  • You: cute like a puppy or cute like you want to take me to dinner

A fork in the road. Either answer is fun.

Unsure

  • You: haha thank you 🙂

Warm, noncommittal, and the next move stays with them.

Not interested

  • You: aw thank you, that’s nice of you!

Kind, no question back, no flirt. Most people read it correctly.

What not to send

  • “no i’m not” Arguing with a compliment makes them defend it.
  • “u too” and nothing else If you mean it, say more. If you don’t, don’t say it.
  • “just cute?” Can be a fun tease, but it can also sound like you’re grading the compliment.
  • Changing the subject completely, if you like them They’ll read it as a no.

Rehearse it first
