You text: had fun saturday! round two this week?

They text: hey, you’re really sweet but i didn’t feel a spark. i don’t think we should go out again

It stings. The reply can still be easy.

Every name and message on this page is made up. Use the replies as starting points, not scripts; no wording guarantees how someone will answer.

What it means (spoiler: what it says)

Rejection texts are one of the few messages that don’t need decoding. The wording varies:

“i’m not interested” or “i didn’t feel a spark”
A clear no to dating. Not an opening offer.
“let’s just be friends”
Sometimes a genuine offer, sometimes a softer no. Either way, not a romantic yes.
“i’m not looking for anything right now”
May be true about timing. It’s still not a reason to wait around.
“you’re great, but…”
The compliment is real, and so is the no.

What you get to decide is how you come across, and whether a friendship offer is one you actually want.

What to reply

Kind and simple

  • You: thanks for being upfront, i appreciate it. take care!

The default. Works almost every time.

  • You: all good, i’d rather know. good luck out there 🙂

    Warm and final.

A little humor, if the vibe was light

  • You: respect. my ego should recover by thursday. take care

    Self-deprecating, no pressure, no ask.

  • You: fair enough. it was a good run (one week)

Light, and it closes the door rather than propping it open.

If you’re hurt

  • You: ngl that stings a bit, but thank you for telling me instead of disappearing

Honest about the feeling without putting it on them.

After a first date

  • You: thanks for letting me know. i had a good time anyway, take care

    Gracious and finished.

They offered friendship, and you want it

  • You: i’d actually like that. see you at jess’s thing saturday

Only if you can genuinely be friends without waiting for a change of heart.

They offered friendship, and you don’t

  • You: that’s kind, but i think i need some space for a bit. no hard feelings

Honest and kind. You don’t owe anyone a friendship either.

If you need to vent

Send the rant to your best friend, not to them. Or type it into your notes app and delete it tomorrow. Being hurt is normal; the reply to them can still be one line.

What not to send

  • “can i ask why?” Sometimes fine, but it asks them to justify a feeling. Most people can’t give a useful answer by text.
  • “you didn’t even give me a chance” Pressure, and it confirms their decision.
  • “your loss” Petty, and you’ll remember sending it.
  • “just checking if you changed your mind” a week later They told you. Believe them.

Rehearse it first

If your first instinct is a long reply, try it in Pretake before anywhere else. Import the chat, send the long version and the one-line version to an AI that texts like them, and see which one you’d rather have sent. None of it reaches them.

Try Pretake on iPhone

AI practice, not the real person: practice replies are possibilities, not predictions, and nothing is sent to them.
