You text: wanna get food this week?

They text: ahh i’m so busy rn 😭

Busy, or “busy”?

Every name and message on this page is made up. Use the replies as starting points, not scripts; no wording guarantees how someone will answer.

Busy, or a soft no?

What they saidWhat it might mean
“busy this week, next week?”Actually busy and still interested. A counteroffer is the best sign there is.
“exam friday 😭 after that i’m free”Actually busy, with specifics and an end date.
“i’m so busy rn”Could be real stress, could be a soft no. Not enough to tell yet.
“busy” again, no alternative, third timeA soft no. Some people would rather be vague than say it directly.

Busy people still find ten seconds to type “next week?” when they want to. Specifics and counteroffers mean interest. Vague and repeated means let them come to you.

What to reply

If they’re slammed

  • You: go be a genius. text me when you’re free

Supportive, zero pressure, and the next move is theirs.

  • You: good luck friday, you’re gonna eat that exam

Shows you caught the specifics. (“eat” = absolutely crush it.)

Make it easy

  • You: no stress. this weekend or next week?

Two options, once. Much easier to answer than “so when are you free?”

Flirty

  • You: fine. but you owe me one (1) coffee when this is over

A playful IOU that assumes there will be an after.

  • You: busy being important i see. lmk when you’ve got 20 min for me

Teasing, with a small and easy ask.

Funny

  • You: noted. i’ll have my people call your people

Lightens the mood and stops the planning loop without sulking.

Chill

  • You: all good, ttyl

Sometimes the best reply is short and unbothered.

After the third “busy”

  • You: all good! i’ll leave it with you, hmu when things calm down

Hands them the next move. Then actually stop suggesting.

What not to send

  • “too busy for me huh” Guilt, and nobody gets less busy from guilt.
  • “busy doing what?” Sounds like an interrogation, not interest.
  • “still busy?” every day A daily reminder that you’re waiting.
  • “people make time for what they want” Might be true. Sending it is still starting a fight.

Rehearse it first

About to suggest a plan to someone who’s been “busy”? Pretake lets you try the ask on an AI version of them first: import the chat, send it in practice, see a possible reply, then rewind and try the lower-pressure version.
