Three weeks later
They text: heyyy stranger 👀
Every name and message on this page is made up. Use the replies as starting points, not scripts; no wording guarantees how someone will answer.
Why they came back
- Bored or lonely
- Checking who still answers. Common, and not very flattering.
- Something genuinely happened
- Family stuff, burnout, a rough patch. Some people go quiet and then feel too awkward to come back.
- It’s a pattern
- Disappear, return, disappear. If this is the second or third time, the pattern is the message.
- Regret
- They realized they liked you more than they thought.
Their first message tells you a lot. Someone who acknowledges the disappearance (“i know i went quiet, i’m sorry”) is offering something. Someone who opens with “hey stranger” and nothing else is hoping you won’t ask.
What to reply
Curious? Make them explain
You: wow, the ghost speaks. what happened?
You: look who remembered my number 👀 where’d you go
Funny, with an edge
You: sorry, who’s this? jk. kind of
You: back from the dead i see. how was the afterlife
Direct
You: honestly it was weird when you disappeared. what’s going on?
If they apologize properly
You: thanks for saying that, i appreciate it. let’s take it slow
Open, with terms
You: i’m down to talk, but i’m not doing the disappearing thing again
Not interested
You: glad you’re good! i’m going to pass on picking this back up though. take care
What not to send
- Acting like nothing happened, when it bothered you It’ll come out later, usually at a worse time.
- A three-paragraph breakdown at 2am If they earn a real conversation, have it then.
- Picking up exactly where you left off Making plans in your first reply skips the part where they explain.
Rehearse it first
Can’t decide between the funny reply and the direct one? Try both in Pretake. Import the old chat, send each to an AI stand-in that texts like them, and compare what might come back. It can’t tell you why they left; it can help you choose your words.
Try Pretake on iPhoneAI practice, not the real person: practice replies are possibilities, not predictions, and nothing is sent to them.
