You text: hey it’s dev from the climbing gym. you still owe me that purple route

They text: omg hi!! i do not owe you anything 😂

Name, callback, tease. Then let them play.

Every name and message on this page is made up. Use the replies as starting points, not scripts; no wording guarantees how someone will answer.

What the number means (and doesn’t)

They gave you their number, so they’re open to hearing from you. That’s all it proves. Sometimes people hand over a number because saying no in person felt awkward. Your first text isn’t there to lock anything in; it’s there to make replying easy and see whether they do.

Only text a number they gave you. If a friend passed it along, ask that friend to introduce you first.

When to send it

Same day or next day. Wait longer and the memory of where you met fades, so the text has to do more work. If you said you’d send something specific (“i’ll send you that song”), send it while it still makes sense.

First texts that work

Callback

  • You: hey it’s dev from the climbing gym. you still owe me that purple route

Who you are, where you met, and a playful debt.

  • You: hi it’s maya, the one who lost at mario kart to your roommate. i demand a rematch

A self-roast gives them something to tease you about.

Funny

  • You: hi it’s priya. you said to text you so this is me being extremely obedient

    Light and a bit cheeky.

  • You: this is noah from saturday. saving you the “who is this” step

Answers their first question before they ask it.

Flirty

  • You: hey it’s ana. i was gonna wait a day to seem chill but that felt fake

Honest and confident in one line.

Straight to a plan

  • You: hey it’s leo from the show. coffee this week? i’m free wed or thurs

    Clear intent and easy options.

Chill

  • You: hey, it’s jamie from earlier. really nice meeting you!

Simple and warm. Enough on its own.

If they reply “who is this?”

It’s not a bad sign. People forget to save numbers.

  • You: your new favorite contact. jk it’s dev from the gym

Don’t take it personally. It happens even when they were excited to meet you. Give the context with a little charm.

If they don’t reply

One follow-up after a couple of days is fine: something like “didn’t want to lose you to the group chat void. coffee this week?” If that gets nothing either, leave it there. For more on waiting, see what to text after being left on read.

What not to send

  • “hey” with no name Makes them guess, and some won’t bother.
  • A paragraph about how you felt when you met Save the feelings for when there’s a conversation.
  • Three texts before they’ve replied once Give them a chance to answer the first one.
  • Asking for their Instagram before they’ve replied One channel at a time.

Rehearse it first

There’s no chat history yet, so there’s no one to rehearse with. Pretake includes a fictional sample person you can practice openers on. Once you’ve been texting for a while, you can import the real chat and rehearse the next step on an AI that texts in their style.

AI practice, not the real person: practice replies are possibilities, not predictions, and nothing is sent to them.
