You text: how was your weekend!

They text: good

You text: do anything fun?

They text: not really

You’re doing all the lifting.

Every name and message on this page is made up. Use the replies as starting points, not scripts; no wording guarantees how someone will answer.

Dry texter, or not interested?

Short replies, but says yes to plansJust not a texter

The easiest test happens offline: suggest a plan. Dry texters who like you usually say yes.

What to send

Ask for a take, not an update

  • You: settle something for me: is clapping when the plane lands sweet or insane

Opinion questions are easier to answer than “how was your day.”

  • You: what’s a food everyone loves that you think is overrated

Low stakes, and it almost always gets a real opinion.

Use a callback

  • You: did you ever end up going to that concert?

Shows you were listening and hands them a story to tell.

Playful call-out

  • You: you text like you’re being charged per letter 😭

Teasing, not accusing. Follow it with something easy to answer.

  • You: your replies are giving job interview. i’m gonna need at least one full sentence

Same idea, a bit bolder. Only if you already joke around.

Move it offline

  • You: texting clearly isn’t your sport. coffee tomorrow instead?

Sometimes the fix is a different format, not a better text.

Match the energy

  • Nothing. Let the next one be theirs.

Not sending is how you find out whether they’ll ever start a conversation.

Wrap it up

  • You: seems like a busy week, i’ll let you go. talk later!

A graceful exit that doesn’t accuse them of anything.

  • You: ok i’ll stop interviewing you lol. night!

Self-aware, and it ends things on a laugh.

What not to send

  • Five questions in one text That’s a form, not a message.
  • Longer and longer messages to make up for it More effort from you doesn’t create effort from them.
  • “why are you so dry” Puts them on trial. Nobody gets chattier under cross-examination.
  • “wyd” for the fourth day running Same question, same “nm.”

Quick answers

Does dry texting mean someone is not interested?

Not necessarily. Some people dislike texting and are far more engaged in person. It is a stronger sign of low interest when short replies come with no questions back, no conversations they start, and no yes to plans.

Rehearse it first

Texting a dry texter leaves a lot of time to overthink between replies. Pretake lets you import that chat and test openers on an AI that copies their texting style, short replies and all. If you’re stuck for a message, “Help me say it” suggests wording to edit.

AI practice, not the real person: practice replies are possibilities, not predictions, and nothing is sent to them.
