All people, messages, amounts and replies in these examples are fictional. Adapt the wording to your situation; no script guarantees a response.
Before you begin
Decide whether you are ending the relationship or asking for a change within it. “I need a break” creates a different expectation from “I’m ending the relationship.” You do not need a flawless argument, but you do need wording that reflects your actual decision.
Choose a channel that fits the relationship and your safety. A conversation may give both people room to speak; a call or message may be more appropriate at a distance or if meeting feels unsafe. If there have been threats or controlling behavior, prioritize support and a safety plan over etiquette. Love is respect has guidance on ending an unhealthy relationship.
What to say: example wording
State the decision
“I’ve thought about this a lot, and I’ve decided to end our relationship. I can’t see a future for us anymore, and I don’t want to keep pretending I can. I’m sorry. I know this hurts.”
Casey owns the decision. The explanation does not require the other person to agree that the relationship should end.
A short message when a conversation is not suitable
“I’m ending our relationship. I don’t want to meet up to talk about changing my mind. We can sort out returning each other’s things by text next week.”
Use this firmer version when it matches what you need. It does not offer an in-person meeting as a requirement for closure.
Set the immediate contact boundary
“I’m not ready to try being friends. I need us to stop messaging for now. I’ll text you on Monday, only to sort out picking up my things.”
Keep logistics specific. If you mean no further personal contact, do not describe it as a short pause to soften the moment.
What not to say, and why
- “Maybe we’ll get back together” when you do not believe that. False hope makes a clear ending harder to understand.
- “You’ll find someone better.” You cannot decide what loss should mean to them or predict their next relationship.
- A detailed ranking of their faults. Explain the decision without turning the conversation into a review of their worth.
How the other person might react
These are invented possibilities to prepare for, not predictions.
They ask for another chance
“I hear that you want to work on it. I’ve made my decision to end the relationship.” Repeat the decision without inventing another reason each time.
They ask whether you ever cared
“I did care about our relationship. Ending it now doesn’t erase that, and I’m still ending it.” Use this only if it is true for you.
They become insulting or threatening
You can end the exchange. Do not stay to demonstrate kindness at the expense of safety. Seek trusted or emergency support if needed; an app cannot manage that situation.
Make practical arrangements separately
Shared housing, finances, children or pets can require a longer and more specialized plan. A breakup sentence does not settle those responsibilities. Write down the immediate practical questions and arrange appropriate support rather than improvising promises during a painful exchange.
Afterward, respect the contact boundary you set and any boundary they communicate. Repeatedly checking whether they are okay can reopen a conversation you said was over. Seek your own support without making them responsible for reassuring you.
Rehearse it first
Rehearse stating the ending and answering a request to reconsider. Stop when the wording is clear; a sympathetic simulated reply is not a forecast of the real conversation.
Pretake on iPhone lets you practice messages with AI and rewind to try different words. It is AI practice, not the real person; a simulated reply cannot tell you what they will think or say. Practice messages are never sent to them.
